The sidewalks are rolled up at 5:00

Well, here I am in downtown Spruce Pine, NC. I am here for a one-day seminar being given by LtCol. Danny McKnight at the Mayland Community College. If the name doesn't ring a bell, he is the leader of the lost convoy in the movie "Blackhawk Down." Spruce Pine is in the middle of nowhere in the North Carolina Mountains. Note the word "pine:" The town isn't big enough to have two trees to call it "Spruce Pines!" This picture is a photograph of the lower street of the downtown area. Most of the shops you see close between 5 and 5:30. To the left of the photo is about a 70 foot drop to a tributary of the French Broad River. I am staying in a place called the Pinebridge Inn. It is an old high school that has been coverted into a hotel. Needless to say, it is definitely different. We walked around the downtown area, cruised around, found the college, and ate dinner at a Western Sizzlin. The only minority I saw the whole time was me!
